[JAPAN's Health Industry] Whole Household Expenditure on Health Food Products Increased by 2% in 2018, and Online Shopping for those Products Increased by 36%

A 2018 Household Expenditure survey was released on 8 February, conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Statistics Bureau -The survey targeted 30,000 households.

The survey shows that online shopping expenditure increased by 3.8% from the previous year. The survey covered 22 categories, including food, beverage, health food, home appliances, cosmetics, ebooks and so on. Expenditure on health food ranked eighth, higher than cosmetics and pharmaceuticals, increasing 35.7% from the previous year. In terms of consumers’ ages, the biggest group were those in their 50s, followed by those in their 40s and then 30s. The number of consumers in their 30s showed a marked increase of 130.1%.

In terms of whole household expenditure, health supplements expenditure increased by 2.3% from the previous year.
